It's Chinese New Year, I would like to greet all my Chinese friends out there, with a
Kung Hei Fat Choi!!!
I list down my TOP 10 Filipino-Chinese who played in the PBA however ... how will you rank and identify if the guy is a Chinese? Same problem we had with Fil-Ams???
In this generation, there will be no kid that has atleast 5% of Chinese blood because Filipino our already a mixed of Spanish+Chinese+Americans+OTHERS so it quite bedazzling to identify if you're really a pure or has NO CHinese blood. Add to the fact, most of the Chinese before changed their family name like Reyes, Mendoza and Dela Cruz. Some players like Dennis Espino , Danny Seigle, Elmer Cabahug, Olsen Racela , Japeth Aguilar and even Alvin Patrimonio are known to have Chinese descent but we are not going to the complexity of the matrix.
In this Ranking, will only ranks those are notable Chinese, probably pure or half. The ranking is based on their achievements, tenure in the league and notably known in the league.

Yeo probably has no luck to tank some awards but he is known to be a tough offensive player. He has labeled as "THE NINJA" because of his sneak-fancy attack on the paint can also be deadly on the 3pt line. Yeo in his college days in DLSU brought a lot of fans because of his F4 looks and also his showmanship on the court. He's been going for a lot of team in his career and had taken some of championship from it.

Tiu got drafted in the PBA a bit old at the age of 25 because he was focus on national team, Smart Gilas but stating the fact, he able to adjust himself in the big league and known dangerous in the 3pt line. Tiu is a multi-award player during his amateur years in Xavier where he was teamed up with Josepyh Yeo and Ty Tang who are both playing in PBA.

Paul Lee is less known as Fil-Chinese because of his all-pinoy feature perhaps only because of his family name 'Lee' will be known to him. Lee is very lethal on Offense with his Balling skills with crossover , foot-works, and smooth penetrations the reason he has been labeled as "Angas ng Tondo" because the way he deliver his move. His ball-IQ as a Point Guard is remarkably good, the reason he got selected in the Smart Gilas for FIBA Spain.

Teng is known with his Defensive expertise that no one can penetrate like a Cop barricading his foe and with wall body like a Robot, the reason he got his monicker RoboCop. Teng is one of the key player for San Miguel Beermen grand slam, he's not really an offensive player but his Defense is really a big deal to their foe. Teng has already a 2nd generation playing in the PBA, his son Jeric Teng is currently in the roster of Rain or Shine.

Who won't forget the Michael Jordan of Asia? The Sky Walker is known with his High-flying Daredevil Dunk, PBA won't be the same without his highlight, the reason most of the fans were watching for. Samboy did not win the MVP because of his reoccurring injuries that he usually gets on his acrobatic drives but despite of this, he still able to play his full 100% just for the sake of winning. A true sportmanship by heart and attitude , the reason the PBA started the Sportmanship award in his likeness.

Lim Eng Beng supposedly in the TOP #1 because he's the very first to recognize in the Fililipino Chinese community because of his excellent contribution in the Basketball. Lim has very humble beginning, he grew up in a poor family and only Basketball became his sole bread-and-butter. One of his big game was when he played in DLSU where he averages 32pts a game and also tallied his career high of 52pts. One of his big record is his 100% fieldgoal percentage in his entire career. Lim is like a legend for the Filipino-Chinese, because of him a lot of youngster followed his put steps that eventually the result of big names of Fil-Chinese that we have right now.

Fortunato Co or the Fortune-Cookie is a rare bread of a shooter, one of his best known with his orthodox footwork on shooting because he will shoot no matter what's his setup. He's very an offensive player that no matter what the circumstances he will take the shot and rain it. Too bad with all his talents in basketball he left it behind and focus himself on Showbizness, Atoy Co will be known in the PBA as one of the greatest pure shooter ever had, some of the players like Allan Caidic, Jeff Chan, Ritualo, Asaytono , Gary David and James Yap are following to his footsteps.

With all those massive numbers of award no-doubt James Yap is the Greatest Player who has Chinese blood. James Yap started his career as a big-shot James career in Bacolod Tay Tung highschool then moved to Iloilo, eversince then he got scouted to play in UE. In his College days, he became automatically the main-man of his team along with Tubid and Canaleta. Big Shot James already carrying bags of awards even before going to the big league of the PBA.
In the PBA, he got all the awards to what it takes to be known as one of the Greatest Player. In their last finals, his team PureFoods grabbed their first ever GrandSlam champion with all his help. With all these being said, James Yap will always be known as the Greatest Filipino-Chinese , unless Bimbi his son follow his step.

I'm sorry for the other player who did not make it, we must consider the generation now specially those post-grandlsam era of SMB.

One of the few SMB who won the MVP though he only tenured for 3yrs with the team before he became a journeyman. Guidaben started as a good rebounder but later developed a strong inside game complimented with accurate off-the-glass jumpers from the perimeter. He was also one of the earliest dunkers in the PBA making the slam dunk vogue in the league a decade before the arrival of highflyers like Samboy Lim, Paul "Bong" Alvarez, Vergel Meneses and Nelson Asaytono. He also had a great rivalry with Toyota's Fernandez which was considered a classic in itself. He won MVP honors in 1983 while with Crispa and 1987 while with San Miguel Beer. Unfortunately, he wound up as a journeyman of sorts having played for eight teams.

Few people know him as a role player during the SMB grandslam era because the team was filled with great players. Teng is known for his massive defender and that no one can pass like a cop, the reason he got the monicker RoboCop. He's one of the integral for the SMB's winning parade because of his defending mind set and Ball IQ for a big man probably he's known to be the greatest defender of SMB ever had.

In 1997, Racela moved to the San Miguel Beermen in what became the turnaround of his young career. Under new San Miguel head coach Ron Jacobs, Racela's skills were noticed under a rebuilding Beermen squad of Nelson Asaytono, Freddie Abuda and Mike Mustre.

In his Rookie years, he usually came off the bench as the sixth man of the already star-studded San Miguel squad, he was able to pull off an outstanding rookie performance and battled neck-to-neck against Lastimosa for the Rookie of the Year Award which was eventually won by latter.
In 1993, he was awarded with the first ever sportsmanship award for his exemplary behavior on the court. Lim is also a member of the Mythical Second Team Selection twice (1990 and 1993). His remarkable play was a joy to watch and he was a constant fan favorite because of his aerial maneuvers. However, also because of those seemingly inhuman skills, Lim suffered numerous serious injuries that limited his PBA career to just nine seasons. Despite the fact that he never won an MVP award, Lim was considered by fans as the "Real MVP."

Agustin was the Most Valuable Player awardee of the PBA in 1992, one of the few SMB who won the MVP. Ato is known for his clutch shots in crucial time and when firing hot he explode like a bomb, the reason he got the monicker "Atom Bomb" Agustin. He's one of the member of SMB's Grandlslam dynasty and had lead the team in offense. Agustin is a pure shooting guard who is more on offense, he's footwork and hands shooting is a gift for every SG .

In the 2009–10 season, his first year with the San Miguel franchise, he shared stellar minutes with the likes of Jay Washington, Dondon Hontiveros, Danny Seigle and Alex Cabagnot. Because of this his averages dipped a bit but again he made it to the Mythical First Team (3rd-straight) and All-Defensive Team (4th time in 4 years).
In the 2011 PBA Governors Cup, he was awarded with the Best Player of the Conference. He also led his team to an improbable championship in the Governor's Cup conference over the highly favored Talk 'N Text team who were aiming to complete a rare grand slam. In so doing, he was named the Phoenix Fuels-PBA Press Corps Finals MVP and wins the Mythical First Team and All-Defensive Team for the 4th and 5th year in a row, respectively. Due to his strong showing, he was a prime candidate for the MVP award alongside Barangay Ginebra's Mark Caguioa and Talk 'N Text's Jimmy Alapag.
In the 2011–12 PBA Season, Santos led Petron Blaze Boosters to a pair of semifinal showings in the PBA Philippine Cup and PBA Governors Cup in a rather disappointing season for him and the team that led to speculations that coach Agustin is now on the way out. Nonetheless he still won the Mythical First Team citation, his 5th in his 6 years in the league, and his 6th consecutive membership in the All-Defensive Team. He was again a strong candidate for the coveted MVP award by placing second in the statistical points behind Gary David of Powerade Tigers.
In the 2012-13 PBA season, Santos led the Petron Blaze Boosters to a runner-up finish in the season-ending Governors Cup against the San Mig Coffee Mixers, he also made it to the Mythical First Team for the sixth straight year and the All-Defensive Team for the seventh straight year.

In 1999, San Miguel acquired Seigle as its direct hire Filipino-foreign cager, after the league instituted a rule for every team to have one Filipino-foreign cager acquired without going through the process of joining the rookie draft.
Seigle won the Rookie of the Year honors[2] but failed to win the coveted Most Valuable Player award, he should have been another Benjie Paras who's the only one received both MVP and Rookie awards on the same year in 1989.
In 2000, Seigle continued to spark big numbers for San Miguel and led the team in regaining the Commissioner's and Governor's Cup titles. He was one of the front runner to win the MVP award, but lost to his teammate Danny Ildefonso. While the Beermen only won the 2001 All-Filipino Conference, they appeared in all three championship series during the year. Once again, he lost to Ildefonso in the MVP race.

Fernandez was a member of San Miguel's historic grandslam in 1989 while making amends with rival Jaworski during the 1989 All-Star Game.
He was the first four-time MVP of the league, winning it in even numbered years during the 1980s—1982, 1984, 1986, and 1988. Considered as the best center to have come out of the PBA, he can however play all five positions on the court with uncanny ability. His trademark one-handed running jumper dubbed the "elegant shot" was his most potent offensive weapon. In 1984, he came awfully close to averaging in triple-double the whole season, being only five assists shy from achieving the feat. He ended his PBA career as the all-time leader in most points scored with 18,996, number two behind Jaworski in assists with 5,220, number one in defensive rebounds with 6,435, number two in offensive rebounds behind Guidaben with 2,217, number one in overall rebounds with 8,652, number one in minutes played with 36624:30, number 2 in games played behind Guidaben, number one in blocks with 1,853, and, only since February 5, 2007, number two behind Johnny Abarrientos in steals with 1,302 (He retired number one in steals in 1994). Ildefonso was a the first draft pick overall by Formula Shell in the 1998 PBA draft, but was traded to San Miguel for the Beermen's second overall pick, Noy Castillo, and cash. In his rookie season, Ildefonso became one of the key players for the Beermen alongside Nelson Asaytono, leading the Beermen to two runner-up finish in the All-Filipino and Commissioner's Cup, losing to Alaska on both occasions. At season's end, he won the Rookie of the Year honors .
The next season, with the departure of Asaytono and the arrival of Filipino-American rookie Danny Seigle and the performances of imports Terquin Mott and Lamont Strothers, San Miguel won two titles in the 1999 Commissioner's Cup and Governor's Cup, ending a five-year title drought.
In 2000, Ildefonso and Seigle would again lead San Miguel to two titles, retaining the Commissioner's and Governor's Cup championships. Ildefonso won the two of the five straight Best Player of the Conference honors and defeated Seigle to win the Most Valuable Player Awards.
In 2001, San Miguel defeated sister team Barangay Ginebra Kings, 4-2 to win the All-Filipino Cup. Despite two losses to Red Bull and Sta. Lucia in the Commissioner's Cup and Governor's Cup finals series, Ildefonso went on to sweep the Best Player of the Conference honors and won his second Most Valuable Player Award, joining Bogs Adornado and Alvin Patrimonio as the only players to win the said award on back-to-back seasons. He also won the All-Star Game MVP honors for the victorious Veterans team. With this feature, Danny Ildefonso became one of the rare players to have won all three major MVP awards in the league: regular season, all-star game, and finals MVP.
During the 2005 Fiesta Conference, the Beermen made it to the semifinals against Red Bull. Ildefonso played one of his best games of the tournament, and hit numerous clutch shots in the tournament, including a series-clinching game-winning fade away over the outstretched arms of Red Bull import Earl Barron to lead San Miguel to the finals against the Talk 'N Text Phone Pals.
In the championship series, Ildefonso again played another impressive performance for San Miguel, leading them to their first title since 2001 and defeating the Phone Pals, 4-1. During the series, Ildefonso made a game-winning layup in game 2 against Asi Taulava and in Game 5, a running jumper that put San Miguel in the lead for good to clinch the series. Ildefonso was named Finals MVP.

He has long friendship with Jojo Lastimosa during their PBL years till to Pro-league in the PBA.
He spearheaded the M. Lhuillier franchise in the Philippine Amateur Basketball League to an unprecedented championship together with Jojo Lastimosa. In PBA they were known to be rival brothers specially in the SMB GrandSlams Era. It's also ironic he got his worst injury from his best friend.
#17 1993 Vintage Buzzer Beater
In the 1993 All-Filipino Finals Cup, Samboy made a memorable halfcourt shot at the buzzer against Coney Island. The shot made a huge impact to the game and to the series even though they did not won the title.

Skywalker was originally came from a famous character in the Novel/Movie StarWars but this has nothing to do with Samboy Lim origin. He's not a son or related with Darthvader (corny) for sure . He got his monicker because of his ability to high leaps and acrobatics in mid-air , it's almost he's walking in thin-air and everything is in slowmotion.
#15 The LIMsantiy
Before the LINSANITY as the NBA sensation there were already a LIMsanity in the 90's. Samboy Lim was loved by many because of his intensity on the court. Just like Jeremy Lin, Samboy Lim started as a 6th Man because San Miguel Beermen was already star-stradded but this not made him blurred behind the shadows of the Beermen Stars. Despite of the big competition in his team, he still able to catch up and pull-off a quality minutes and eventually became integral of his team's GrandSlam championships.

During the 90's if someone wore a high-socks he's already gets monickered as Samboy Lim just for fun. Samboy Lim wears knee-high socks, his testament and tribute to his idol Julius "Dr. J" Erving .

After his stint with the PBL, Lim entered the Philippine Basketball Association, as a draftee of the San Miguel Beermen. Though he usually came off the bench as the sixth man of the already star-studded San Miguel squad, he was able to pull off an outstanding rookie performance
#12 Free Throw Mannerism
He was a weird free-throw habit. Samboy messes up his hair before taking a shot in the free-throw lane and he doesn't bend his knees.

Samboy has so many moves but his best pioneered move is the cross-over head shoulder fake. He uses this to fake and by-pass his defender. This move has revolutionized by upcoming PBA players who idolized him.

In early days it's uncommon for a player to drive and leap high, that's the reason why Samboy Lim took over the PBA Top Ten Plays of the Week in every week. His skywalking, driving, and passing moves was usually on the top spot every week.
#9 Letrans First Knight
Samboy won an MVP award in the NCAA as he propelled the Letran Knights to a grandslam feat during the early 1980s.
#8 1990 All Stars MVP
Samboy Lim leads the veterans to win against the star stradded RSJ team in their prime year in the likes of Alvin Patrimonio, Jojo lastimosa, Benjie Paras, Jerry Condinera and Ronnie Magsanoc. He finished with 42 big points including those spectacular high leaping highlights.
#7 Worst and Tragic Injury in PBA
Due to the style of his high-wire game, Samboy never completed a season in the PBA due to injuries. One of his tragic injuries was a heated game with Purefoods. Regaining momentum in the last quarter after trailing most of the game, Samboy drove past several defenders and was inadvertedly clotheslined by Jojo Lastimosa in the air. This caused Samboy's body to lose control and went flying upside down hitting his head first then shoulder on the hardwood floor. Blood spilled and he was taken out in a stretcher. He had a cut in his forehead that needed 18 stitches outside and 8 stitches inside to close up. Also during that game, the collision sent Samboy in a somersault and his foot hit the board. This is one of the most tragic injury witnessed by everyone in a basketball game.
#6 The Original Man with the Million Moves
Samboy Lim is not only known for his high leaping acrobatic drive but also with his million-moves. Vergel Meneses "The Aerial Voyager" learned some nifty moves from Samboy that he applied to his slashing game. James Yap and Kenneth Duremdes one handed shot are also a product of Samboy Lim style. Paul Alvarez slashing and above the rim stunt is also a revolutionized skywalker style.
#5 Lucky Number 9
Samboy wore the number 9 since his collegiate days up to the international games and in his entire career in the PBA. Ironically, he also played his entire career a total of 9 years with San Miguel Beer. He also use #9 as a reverse number of his NBA idol DR.J (Julius Erving) who's wearing the Jersey #6.
#4 The Father of Sportmanship Award
In 1993, the Sports Committee of the PBA created this award for Samboy because he was a true sportsman of the game. He was awarded with the first ever sportsmanship award for his exemplary behavior on the court. Also according to the media, the committee wanted to give this special award to Samboy in honor of his impact to the game and that he just couldn't complete a season because of injuries. For the many, this award for Samboy was almost considered an MVP award.
#3 World Domination
In 1985, the Philippine Team competed in the World Club Basketball Championship in Girona, Spain. The Philippine team, wearing the San Miguel jersey, were loved by the European audiences due to the fact they were the smallest team competing on the tournament which included the national teams of Yugoslavia and Italy (Dražen Petrović that time was guarding Hector Calma).
He led the team with his patented open court and acrobatic shots scoring his 37 points performance against Banco di Roma of Italy. Because of the intensity and competitiveness, during the game Samboy suffered extreme exhaustion and fatigue. After the game, he had to be carried out in a stretcher with an oxygen tank. His dedication and courage made him an instant folk hero. Then it happened again in their game against the US Team in the 1985 William Jones Cup where they won the game and became champions
#2 The Real MVP
His remarkable play was a joy to watch and he was a constant fan favorite because of his aerial maneuvers. However, also because of those seemingly inhuman skills, Lim suffered numerous serious injuries that limited his PBA career to just nine seasons. Despite the fact that he never won an MVP award, Lim was considered by fans as the "Real MVP."
Even Samboy Lim ends up wounded he still much concern about the outcome of the game. After the accident in the game, Jojo Lastimosa , a close friend of Samboy visited him at Makati Medical Center. According to Jojo, the first thing that Samboy mentioned is "Who won the game?" This was the attitude of a true sportsman and a friend.
In1993, Samboy Lim and Hector Calma volunteered to have their salary cut in order to acquire their good friend, Allan Caidic (who was a free agent from the disbanded Presto Ice Cream). This deal resulted in multiple championships. Back then, San Miguel was an All-Star studded team composed of great players like Ramon Fernandez and Ato Agustin.

Samboy is the only player known to get applauses and standing ovation from fans (even fans from the opposing team) as he walks to the scoring table to enter the game. He also gets a thundering roar from the crowd whenever he touches the ball

Paul Alvarez even mentioned in an interview that during his teenage years he runs home to watch the games of the Skywalker in the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.
Samboy was even the great coach Big J Robert Jaworski's favorite player to field in in international games or in All-Star exhibitions. In the 1990 All-Star Game, Samboy played most of the entire game under coach Jaworski. The only time the Skywalker got a breather was when the Big J entered the game substituting him.

The Michael Jordan of the Philippines
In an Asian Journal, an author from China went to the Philippines to get a perspective of the Basketball Scene. After the visit, the author wrote that Samboy Lim is the Michael Jordan of the PBA. It was also mentioned in an article that Ron Jacobs, the famous coach of NCC/San Miguel in the International Arena, sent Samboy to the States for an operation. Ron Jacobs said to the doctor, "Please fix Samboy. He is my Michael Jordan." Even PBA commentator Joe Cantada addressed in the 1990 All-Star game that Samboy is the Michael Jordan of Philippine Basketball.The heart and competitiveness of the Dragon Skywalker Avelino "Samboy" Lim was evident especially on international competitions.
